Naming troubles

So Ubuntu just announced a new project named Myna… Since this library isn’t very functional yet it’s probably best if we just renamed it.

For those that don’t know, Myna is meant to be a client library for Matrix and the basis of our implementation in purple 3. It doesn’t really do anything yet as we’ve been busy with other things, but that is its intent.

I’m leaning towards Motmot. What do you all think? Do you have any other suggestions?

Seems like a reasonable move to me, but then I’m not usually very picky about naming.

Mot also means ‘word’ in French, so motmot is like multiple words/a conversation/a matrix of words. Just reaching for some additional puns…

Ooo I like that! Also google translate tells me that it it means “against” in Norwegian which works well for many people’s feelings towards matrix too :rwgrimlol:

Do we care that there’s a camera software named motmot? It doesn’t look that active though. GitHub - motmot/motmot: camera utilities · GitHub

Of course we care, lack of caring is what Canonical did here  We don’t want to reuse a name that’s already in use.

Their most recent update was 3 years ago which is probably active enough to avoid using. GitHub - motmot/imops: image format conversion (e.g. between MONO8, YUV422, and RGB) · GitHub

I’ve been browsing the list of birds and so far I came across Manakin and Monjita as bird names with M that to me at least sound alright and for which I haven’t found other software named after. There are no puns related to Matrix I can see though. I don’t have strong feeling toward either name I just wanted to note it down here.

I was kind of leaning towards Manakin as well, and some others from https://parenting.firstcry.com/articles/gen-list-of-birds-that-start-with-m/

  • Munia
  • Manakin
  • Mistle

For Mistle, this fact seems fitting..

The mistle thrush is known to fiercely defend its food sources, especially berry trees, from other birds.

I had Munia too, but there’s an accounting software with that name: https://download.cnet.com/munia/3000-2057_4-10449707.html
I like Mistle but there’s GitHub - mistlehq/mistle: Open source background agents · GitHub

It seems odd to me that manakin is the only one not in use…

ugh there’s a whole lot actually… Repository search results · GitHub

I suppose we could use R birds because of matrix’s previous name…

Okay Mohoua sounds decent and seems to be clear…

Mohoua are gregarious (more so outside the breeding season) and usually forage in groups. They also forage in mixed species flocks at times, frequently forming the nucleus of such flocks.[2] Social organization and behaviour is well documented for all three Mohoua species

Although there does seem to be some hits for the common name mohua.

Oh I hadn’t actually searched on github itself. I’m always afraid of being rate limited …

Funny I never get rate limited there.. Then again, I barely use it so that’s probably why…

I came across A dictionary of English and folk-names of British birds and found Molenek (a Cornish name for the Goldfinch) and Mwope (a name for the Bullfinch in Dorset). I kind of like Mwope

I kind of like Mwope, but I had another thought… What about characters from the matrix series whose names start with m… That gives us

  • Merovingian
  • Mifune
  • Mjolnir is the name of Roland’s ship.
  • Mnemosyne is the name of Bugs’s ship in ressurection.

Of those, I’m sure Mjolnir is used. Mergovingian and Mnemosyne are probably usable but too long and too hard to spell. That leaves Mifune, but there are of course a bunch of github hits.

I could see Mnemosyne work when you shorten the namespace name to mnemo but the name is also used already. It really seems next to impossible to come up with a good name that’s not already used these days.

Digging deeper into obscure names how about Mulfran which is Welsh for cormorant?

Maybe we should just reach out to the motmot people?
