Retiring the State of the Bird

After a bit of deliberation I’ve decided we’re going to retire the State of the Bird posts for the immediate future.

I’m currently 3 months behind as the last one I actually published was April 2026. There is a fair amount of work that goes into these, which is why I’ve fallen behind and so far no one has mentioned missing these posts in the past three months which tells me no one was really getting anything of value out of it.

I started the State of the Bird to try to show people that the project was still alive and announce what we were working on. However, that’s kind of redundant now with the quarterly releases we’ve been doing.

The releases don’t cover everything we were doing in the State of the Birds, but most of those things, like requesting help, should have been posts here on Discourse anyways. I’m going to put together a contributing category or something to help with that.

I would also like to thank everyone that has enjoyed the State of the Bird posts/videos over the years and hope that this decision is useful for everyone! But if you have any comments, please share them below!

I think that’s a good decision. Especially with Pidgin 3 having been and being a massive undertaking I think focus and a good effort-to-reward ratio is important.

The State of the Birds were very, very detailed which I assume took a lot of time and work. That level of detail often actually it made difficult for me to identify major and interesting changes. I reckon many who follow Pidgin development feel similarly.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve also been trying to come up with some new ideas on how to convey the status of the project and protocol support. I have a few rough ideas, but if there’s anything you can think of that would be helpful for you personally, please let me know
