Back in March of 2021 we create our PidginChat XMPP host and opened it to anyone that was registered in our Single Sign-On service. We did this to give users a way to reach us via XMPP while also trying to get more people exposed to XMPP. Unfortunately, these goals were never met.
One thing we were never trying to become was a full blown chat network operator as we don’t have the time, expertise, or other resources to do this well and unfortunately we have come across multiple tutorials of people instructing others how to do just that using PidginChat. Even making claims about making a Signal Replacement or that it’s a “Freedom of Speech” network.
Due to these reasons we will be discontinuing the service. The service will be turned off as of 2026-12-31 but new users are already no longer automatically enrolled.
While we don’t have any strong feelings on where people should migrate to, you may want to find an XMPP server that’s in your country which you can do here. This will have the added benefit of being federated across the rest of XMPP which PidginChat explicitly was not.
We would also recommend checking out Zulip where you can get a small hosted instance for free and it has clients for all major operating systems and mobile.
Thank you everyone for your support of this service!
