Recently a new public Open Oscar Server has been stood up at logon.chat.
So if you want to fire up your old AIM/ICQ clients, including Pidgin with retro-prpl, go check it out!
To do this with Pidgin with retro-prpl is pretty easy, just add an AIM account and change the server to logon.chat:
Once you’re connected you can message anyone you like, but there is also a General chat you can join by selecting Buddies -> Join A Chat... from the Buddies List window. In the dialog that pops up, select your AIM account, enter General into the name field and set the exchange to 5.
If everything worked, you should now be in the chat!
